What New Canaan houses need

New Canaan is the one town on our list where the roofline is not always the answer. The modern houses the town is known for have flat or very low slope roofs, deep overhangs, and long horizontal lines with no eave edge to clip to. Running a traditional roofline on one of those either does not work or looks wrong on the architecture.

The rest of town is the opposite problem in the best way. Antique colonials and farmhouses in the village off Elm and Main, and out through Silvermine, have irregular rooflines, additions meeting at odd angles, and original clapboard and trim that need a light touch. Up on Oenoke Ridge and Smith Ridge the lots get bigger and the trees close to the house start to matter as much as the roof. Both types are worth designing individually, which is why you see the plan on a photo of your own house before you agree to anything.

Lighting a modern house

On a flat roofed modern, we light what the house actually gives us: the entry, the horizontal fascia line where there is one, the trees framing the elevation, and the drive. Done right it looks deliberate and architectural instead of like holiday lights bolted onto a house that was not designed for them.

If you own one of these, say so when you call. We will plan the design visit around what the house can carry rather than showing up with an assumption.

How it goes

From your call
to lights on.

No packages and no waiting weeks for a quote. You see the design on your own house before we hang a bulb.

  1. Design visit

We come out to New Canaan, usually within a day or two of your call, and design it on the iPad on a photo of your house. You see the roofline lit, pick the colors, and get one flat price. You go on the schedule right then.

  2. Installed that week

Most homes are installed the same week as the design visit. Commercial-grade LED, hidden clips, timers set, and everything tested at dusk before we pull out of the driveway.

  3. Lit all season

Anything goes dark, text us and we fix it, no charge. In January it all comes down and goes to our shop, labeled, until next year. Nothing in your garage.

What it costs in New Canaan

Pricing does not change by town. Most homes land between $800 and $3,500 for the season, and the number comes from how much roofline you have, how tall the house is, and how many trees and entry pieces you want lit. Every quote is one flat, all-in price covering design, installation, service all season, takedown in January, and storage.

See the full pricing breakdown for ranges by house size, or send your address and we will come out and give you an exact number.

New Canaan questions

I have a mid-century modern with a flat roof. Can you do anything?

Yes, just not a standard roofline run. We light the entry, the fascia line where the house has one, the trees framing the front, and the driveway. It is a different design, and on a modern it usually looks better than a traditional outline would.

My house is antique. Will the clips damage the trim?

No. Clips go on the shingle edge or gutter lip, and nothing is stapled, screwed, or nailed. On an antique with original clapboard or hand cut trim we walk the mounting plan with you at the design visit, before anything goes up and before you agree to it.

The house is far back on a wooded lot. Is it worth lighting the roof?

By itself, often not. If the road cannot see the house, lighting the trees along the drive and the entry does more than a perfect roofline nobody can see. We will tell you that at the design visit rather than sell you the bigger roofline job.
